Lady Alopecia’s Complete Pura D’Or Review

Why this Shampoo Makes the Lady Purr

Bottle of Pura Dor Shampoo

Been looking for hair growth treatments for a while? Then you’ve probably come across more than one Pura D’Or review already. Or maybe you’ve spied one of those golden-labelled bottles in real life.

It’s a popular brand – and not just for those experiencing hair loss or thinning hair. Pura D’Or is great for everyone, really. Especially for those who want glossy-looking and healthy hair. Which includes a lot of people, aside from perhaps us baldies.

But even if you don’t have much – or any – hair to begin with, I’d still recommend Pura D’Or as a routine shampoo to cleanse and care for your scalp. It’s affordable, it’s natural and it makes many of those lovely oils I recommend for hair growth in addition to its very popular shampoos and conditioners.

In this post, I’ll talk about a few of my favourite natural Pura D’or treatments, the difference between them and where to buy them.

Benefits of Pura D’Or Shampoo

In this review, I’ll focus mainly on Pura D’Or’s chemical free shampoo, simply because it’s their most popular product. And even though they make a few different shampoos now, it all started with the original: Pura D’Or Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Shampoo.

This organic-certified treatment could be the best hair thickening shampoo around – or at least, it’s definitely up there with my favorites (which is this one, FYI)!

The sulfate free shampoo works especially well for those with fine hair or thinning hair due to shedding. For other top sulfate free shampoos, check out this post.

The hair and scalp health benefits of this hair loss shampoo for men and women are numerous and include:

Amazing Customer Reviews

Now, I know these numbers can be inflated through all kinds of nasty means but still…10,000 positive Pura D’or shampoo reviews on Amazon (and counting) is still pretty impressive! Unlike big brands like Keranique, they don’t make grandiose claims of regrowth: they just let their reviews do the talking.

Most reviewers mention how it gives them smoother, silkier hair that’s soft to touch, and plenty of them mention how it helps with healthy hair growth issues, too.

Healthier Hair

The alcohol free shampoo has got superstar ingredients to offer the best possible hair care, whether you have a full mop or you just want a great scalp moisturizer. One of those ingredients, biotin, works to thicken each hair follicle – so your strands will be less likely to become brittle or dry, and less prone to snapping.

Another ingredient, tea tree oil, is an amazing antioxidant…gently cleansing your scalp and getting rid of the excess dirt or sebum that can clog hair follicles, nourishing your skin after exposure to environmental damage or harsh chemicals. Phew!

Eco-Friendly Ethos

It’s nice to be nice, right? Especially when we’re talking about being kind to the environment while being kind to our bodies. And Pura D’Or’s hair thickening shampoo helps you do both – it’s organically certified and uses the most bioavailable botanical ingredients.

It’s also free from the compounds that get a bad rep, like sulfates, parabens and gluten, too. Yay!

Honesty

One of the things I really like about Pura D’Or is: they don’t make false promises. Just like my other favorite brand, Nioxin, they never claim to be “a hair growing shampoo”. (Nioxin, btw, is more of a dermatologist recommended shampoo for hair loss – but it unfortunately contains sulfates these days).

Rather, they market their product as an “anti-thinning shampoo”; one that provides a better scalp environment so that regrowth may occur. So don’t expect miracles – it probably isn’t the best shampoo to prevent hair loss – but do expect some serious moisture and healthier hair!

What’s In It? Pura D’Or Ingredients

Again, I’ll focus on the gold label anti-thinning shampoo: the brand’s flagship product. The lovely brown bottle contains a tasty blend of 17 active ingredients, including premium oils and other botanical compounds which nourish and restore damaged hair.

It also uses USDA organic vegetable glycerin, derived from coconut to hydrate the scalp, soften the hair and balance scalp pH levels. A far safer choice than a shampoo with minoxidil, in my opinion!

Here are 5 active ingredients that are particularly nourishing for dry, damaged or frizzy hair.

  • Biotin: This member of the Vitamin B family helps to thicken and strengthen the hair shaft, so it’s ideal for those who are perhaps deficient in Vitamin B and who might have thinning hair. In fact, a 2016 study showed that 38% of female test subjects who complained of hair loss, had a biotin deficiency.
  • Aloe Vera: Another natural ingredient that Lady Alopecia has gushed about in a previous post, this one is particularly great for reducing inflammation and providing moisture in the form of Vitamin E.
  • Red Korean Seaweed: Ok, admittedly I know less about this particular ingredient. But I have had seaweed baths before, and afterwards my hair and skin felt amazingly moisturised and soft!
  • Zinc Pyrithione: An ingredient that’s common to anti-dandruff shampoos, this is also used for the treatment of psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis – conditions that may stem from a damaged scalp environment and are linked to hair thinning and hair loss. It’s a particularly good hair loss treatment for women as many of us have zinc deficiencies behind our shedding.
  • Saw Palmetto: A superstar hair loss remedy that works as a DHT blocker to fight male pattern baldness and is active in the top alopecia shampoos, like Shapiro MD. But Pura D’Or is a more natural dht blocking shampoo.

LA Says: I won’t bore you with the remaining 12 ingredients! But Pura D’Or includes more great natural ingredients like nettle, pumpkin seed oil, cedarwood, clary sage and cumin extract, which will further nourish your scalp for healthier hair. Many of these ingredients block DHT, too, in a natural way.

Pros and Cons of Pura D’Or

Pros of Pura D’Or

  • It’s actually twice as concentrated as most other natural shampoos with biotin
  • A sulfate free shampoo that blocks DHT in a natural way
  • All of the products smell great!
  • Best store brand shampoo that’s affordable: so you can stock up on a few treatments
  • Kind to the environment
  • A shampoo that doesn’t cause hair loss when you start using it (which can happen with stronger ones)

Cons of Pura D’Or

  • For some people, especially those with oily hair, it may be a little too “heavy”
  • Results a little slower: At least 1-2 months before any real difference may be noticed. So it might not be the best shampoo for postpartum hair loss or other forms of sudden hair loss, as it can be slow to take effect.

Other Pura D’Or Products

If I was going to review every single product that Pura D’Or offers – and there are lots, including options for colored hair – I’d be here forever! But here are a few of its most popular natural and organic shampoos and conditioners, which you can add to your hair care regimen in addition to the Gold Label Shampoo.

Best Pura D’Or Shampoos and Conditioners

  • Deep Moisturizing Biotin Conditioner: To be used with the Gold Label shampoo, this creamy conditioner, enhanced with aloe vera and argan oil, adds an extra level of nourishment without making your hair feel greasy. Best for dry hair or normal hair types, its key role is to de-tangle and de-frizz.
  • Professional Grade Shampoo & Conditioner: According to the company’s website, these products utilize “advanced PuraPlex™ technology to fortify thinning hair and provide maximum hydration for stronger, healthier-looking strands, with increased volume and shine.” No harm in adding a touch of salon luxury to these top sulfate free shampoos!
  • Thin2Thick Shampoo & Conditioner with Apple Cider Vinegar and Castor Oil: Based on the recommendation of a friend, I’ve started rinsing my hair with apple cider vinegar after shampooing it. It does leave it lovely and shiny… but unfortunately, it stinks! This one smells great.

Psst…If it’s out of your budget to buy direct from Pura D’Or, Amazon has a pretty good deal on the shampoo and conditioner set.

Best Pura D’Or Oils

  • Organic Castor Oil: Whether you use it as a carrier oil for overnight hair masks, or take advantage of the handy wand that’s included to help grow your eyelashes and eyebrows, this baby is your new secret weapon for hair growth.
  • Organic Argan Oil: You may already know how much I love this oil and its near-miraculous effect in terms of hair loss. If not, check out this post and come back to me when you’re done!
  • Rosehip Seed Oil: 100% natural, this oil can reduce inflammation to foster a healthy scalp and support hair growth
  • Rosemary Essential Oil: As well as a range of other pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils (that you’ll need to mix with a carrier like extra virgin coconut oil), this oil stimulates circulation to promote hair growth, while you enjoy its calming, grounding aroma. Mmmm…
  • Organic Jojoba Oil: If you’re making any of the hair masks with essential oils that I recommend in this post, you’ll need a good carrier oil. And jojoba is one of my very favorites – whether you’re using it on its own or mixing it with coconut oil or almond oil.

Are There Any Bad Side Effects?

Good news: Nope! Pura D’or offer alcohol free shampoos without a zillion chemicals, too.

So unless you happen to have an allergic reaction to some of the natural botanicals (which is rare enough), you won’t see any bad side effects to using Pura D’Or. And you can use it every day, if you like… it’s plant-based formula is pretty gentle so it won’t strip your hair of its natural oils. Phew.

So is Pura D’Or shampoo safe? In my experience, yes – and from the reports I’ve heard back from parents, it’s safe for children, too (particularly this specialized Kids’ Cleanser).

But if you happen to be one of the few people who experiences mild scalp irritation or a change in hair texture (not in a good way), and if this still happens two weeks in, I’d switch to another product.

Common Questions

When will I see results?

Because the ingredients are so natural, they may take a little longer than a stronger hair loss shampoo. But you should notice a difference after a month, if not sooner.

Final Thoughts: Does Pura D’Or Really Work for Hair Loss?!

Full disclosure? I don’t think that any topical shampoo can miraculously boost hair growth on its own. Because hair loss depends on such a range of factors, including diet and lifestyle, that one shampoo alone can’t reverse this condition. Or at least, not in the long-term.

However, I do appreciate that offering a healthier scalp environment is a great way to stimulate hair growth and reduce hair thinning. Which is something that Pura D’Or can do in spades and is why it gets my vote as a top routine shampoo for thinning hair.

The organic shampoo works to strengthen and volumize your hair from root to tip – reducing the chances of it snapping or breaking and, as a result, limiting hair loss. The conditioner moisturizes the scalp and brings down inflammation. While the oils boost blood flow; very important for helping hair follicles do their thing.

You might not see immediate results. And it might not be the best shampoo to grow hair either.

BUT switching to Pura D’Or products, or an all-natural shampoo like Revita, will mean you’re treating your head to botanical, hair-boosting ingredients instead of heavy chemicals contained in popular shampoos. And they’re both really affordable, too.

For me, anyway, that’s reason enough to check it out!

  1. Hello, thank you for your sharing. May I know is the gold label shampoo in transparent or opaque form? As I have oily scalp, so I tend to use transparent shampoo which helps in controlling the oil. I’m using Nioxin system 1 currently and would like to try Pura d’or for its more natural formula.

    1. Hi Mon,

I’m so sorry for the late reply…I just had my first baby 2 months ago so it’s taken me until now to get back to comments! Thanks for your patience.

Great question! So the gold label one is transparent, you’ll be glad to hear. So is the blue label one, actually…but the gold label has a 100% natural preservative system that’s plant-based (while blue label includes phenoxyethanol). So the gold label is even more natural! The conditioner for both is opaque but if you’re just going for the shampoo, that’ll be fine for oily scalps.

      Hope that helps!

  2. Hello! I’ve been searching for a positively reviewed and cruelty-free shampoo for hair growth/hair loss, and I’m happy to have found out about Pura D’or as well as your review of them. In your experience of purchasing their products, have you bought directly from their website (www.purador.com)? If so, have you had a good buying experience with them (i.e., they actually shipped the order in a timely fashion, everything arrived, they have addressed any messages about your order)?

I felt a little apprehensive about buying shampoo on Amazon, because there have been reviews stating the products people received were fake. So, I thought I should maybe buy directly from the manufacturer, but I have also read about some people’s experiences with other hair care companies, who never sent an order or didn’t send everything.

    Thank you for your help!

    1. Hi May,

Thanks so much for your lovely feedback, I really appreciate it! I have bought from their website in the past, but also from Amazon. Most recently I’ve started ordering from iHerb – that’s where I got my Hair Thinning Shampoo one and their castor oil, too – and both arrived really quickly! It’s been a while since I went direct through the manufacturer (and I didn’t need any extra communication about my order) but I don’t remember having any problems…although perhaps nowadays, there will be COVID-related delays.

I completely understand your concern about a) fake products and b) bad experiences with buying direct but I think you’ll be ok in this case. The main companies with autoship scams I’ve researched are Keranique and Shapiro MD – I think you should be ok with going directly through Pura D’Or if you like!

      Hope that helps, May!

Wishing you all the very best,

      Emma 🙂

      1. Hi Emma,

You were so kind and helpful to take the time to respond and answer my questions. It’s encouraging to hear that this company follows good practices. Thank you very much again. 🙂

  3. I’ve been using their shampoo and conditioner for a couple of years now. While I do not see a lot of new hair growth I do not see a lot of shedding either. I have read other reviews that it makes hair wiry, brittle and hard to comb out. I have the opposite affect. My hair is shiny, silkier and feels healthier. Love that their products contain no harmful chemicals and sulphates. I think the products are great. Haven’t tried any of the oils yet.
Thank you for sharing your review.

    1. Hi Ramona,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It’s great that you enjoy it and that it’s improved the texture and health of your hair. I agree, I love the fact that it’s totally natural…so even if it isn’t a ‘miracle hair loss treatment’, in my opinion, it’s a lot kinder to the scalp than many other products out there! I love their oils too, especially the castor one (although I’ve recently started with their argan one, too. 🙂 ) Thanks again for writing in!!

  4. I started using pura d’or shampoo and conditioner about two weeks ago and my hair is falling out faster. I’ve clogged the shower drain twice which used to only happen once or twice a year. Is this normal? Do you think i should continue using it?

    1. Hi Laura, I’m really sorry to hear that you’re experiencing more hair fall. While that didn’t happen to me when I started using it, it’s actually quite a common occurance when you switch brands…a lot of people who try things like Nioxin say the same thing. This is basically your scalp getting used to the new formula. It could also mean it’s kickstarting the ‘growth’ phase (anagen) so it needs to shed the old, dead hair first. However, this shouldn’t go on any more than 2-3 weeks. So maybe give it another week? Then if it doesn’t stop, try using it every 2nd day instead to see if that makes a difference.

If the shedding persists and you’re getting concerned, I’d consider stopping with Pura D’Or. But like I said, this shedding is to be expected at this stage so try not to worry!

      Hope that helps xo

  5. Thanks a lot for your wonderful review of purador shampoo. I have been trying to keep my very thin hair and scalp as healthy as possible. I agree with your review I think the products are great.

    1. Hi Laurie! Thanks so much for your comment, and it’s great to hear you’re enjoying Pura D’Or shampoo! I love it anyway, and I also really like their oils, too (worth trying, if you haven’t already!) Thank you for sharing, and have a great day! 🙂
