Ultrax Labs Hair Surge Review

Can Caffeine Help Hair Growth?

Ultrax Labs Hair Surge Shampoo Bottle

I came across Ultrax Labs when researching the top shampoos for alopecia. This caffeine shampoo came up again and again in hair loss forums as a customer favorite, right up there with the big-hitters like Nioxin.

And the more I read about Ultrax Labs Hair Surge Caffeine Stimulating Shampoo, the more I liked it. It doesn’t have the catchiest name, but it’s what’s inside that counts, right? And this baby’s packed with tonnes of great natural hair growth promoters.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons for losing your hair – environmental factors, hormone imbalances, stress or inflammation – so switching up your shampoo won’t always bring it back.

However, I believe in supporting your scalp health with nourishing ingredients, rather than harmful toxins. With a healthy scalp, you can reduce the kind of inflammation and irritation that often trigger hair loss – and allow new, healthier and thicker hair to grow.

In this Ultrax Labs Hair Surge review, I’ll explain how its powerful, yet gentle ingredients can help you minimize shedding and maybe even see new hair growth.

What is Ultrax Labs?

Ultrax Labs are a US-based company that make a range of hair care products for thinning hair and to support hair health: including a shampoo, a conditioner, a nutritional supplement, hair thickener and a hair mask.

But for the purposes of this post, I’ll be focusing on their Hair Surge shampoo: one of the most popular shampoos for hair regrowth around.

The caffeine shampoo is a natural DHT blocker, which stimulates hair follicles to promote hair growth and, in the meantime, boosts the volume of your exisiting hair.

Fun fact: Caffeine is proven in clinical studies to be almost as effective in stimulating hair growth and increasing hair density as 5% minoxidil for men with androgenetic alopecia. Without the dodgy side effects. It’s one of the best natural remedies to stimulate new growth.

Together with ketoconazole, saw palmetto and peppermint oil, also proven hair promoters, this over-the-counter shampoo could be a much more gentle (and affordable!) approach to treating hair loss and encouraging hair regrowth.

Ultrax Labs is great for both men and women, and all hair types: even if you’re not suffering from hair loss, you can still use it for healthier, stronger hair.

Hair Surge: Key Ingredients & Benefits

Ultrax Labs Hair Surge, and their other treatments for hair loss, are cruelty free and contain mainly natural ingredients. (I say ‘mainly’ because Hair Surge contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) – and sulfates aren’t exactly the kindest ingredients for sensitive scalps. But more on that later.

The shampoo includes caffeine as its main active ingredient: a well-known stimulant that, when applied topically, stimulates the hair follicles to increase chances of natural hair growth. Hair Surge contains other special natural ingredients, with the following benefits for men and women:

Blocks DHT

Includes Caffeine and Saw Palmetto as natural DHT blockers. These ingredients help block the production of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the hormone most commonly linked to thinning hair and hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness.

They achieve this by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase so DHT can’t attach itself to hair follicle androgen receptors, and they won’t shrink or close up in response (in a process called hair miniaturization).

Conversely, caffeine actually elongates the hair shaft to encourage new hair growth. Woohoo!

Increases Blood Flow

If you’ve got problems with blood circulation, whatever nutrients you slather on your head can’t do their job. So Ultrax labs Hair Surge shampoo contains Menthol, a cooling agent that not only lowers scalp inflammation, but stimulates more blood flow to the scalp.

Increased blood circulation also comes from Niacin, known as Vitamin B3.

Menthol and Niacin revive dormant hair follicles while allowing oxygen and key vitamins and minerals to penetrate deep into the follicles and nourish the hair shaft. Plus, Menthol gives you a lovely tingling sensation on your scalp…and it smells great!

That tingly feeling also comes from Peppermint Oil, which is an amazing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and has been proven in animal trials to be just as effective as minoxidil for stimulating hair growth.

Maintains Scalp Health

The scientifically-formulated shampoo also includes 0.2% Ketoconazole, which helps to fight fungus and bacterial infections on the scalp. It’s actually a key ingredient in prescription dandruff shampoos.

Together with exfoliating caffeine (in a propriety compound called CaffinoPlex), anti-fungal ketoconazole removes excess sebum and debris, which could otherwise block hair follicles and trigger hair loss.

A healthy scalp = healthy hair, after all – so I love that Ultrax Labs Hair Surge starts off by focusing on scalp wellness: with an ingredient that actually works to prevent alopecia.

Strengthens Hair

Another great natural ingredient included in Ultrax Labs’ formula is Cocamidopropyl Betaine – an ingredient found in coconut oil, which strengthens each hair follicle at the root.

It also promotes hair recovery: useful for anyone with dry or damaged hair as a result of chemical treatments or overprocessing…or even environmental factors like UV exposure and pollution.

So if you’ve got thinning hair that’s prone to breakage, you’d really benefit from Ultrax Labs’ thickening and strengthening formula.

Customer Reviews

Customers are really happy with Hair Surge: noting stronger, thicker hair, and a visible reduction in hair fall after just a couple of uses.

Angelina K says:

I can honestly say that I have lost faith in all hair loss/hair growth products UNTIL I tried the Ultrax Labs Hair Surge Caffeine Hair Loss Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo – with this product my faith in hair loss/hair growth products has been restored.

I’ve been in the process of losing my hair since my early twenties, due to the daily abuse that I put it through, from chemically treating it to regularly straightening it to even gluing hair extensions in my hair. However, the straw that broke the camel’s back with my hair loss was my pregnancy – after having a child I couldn’t even wear my hair down because running my fingers through my hair would cause me to lose about 15 hairs every time. My hair was literally shedding EVERYWHERE.

For the past few years I have tried probably every product there is out there to help with my hair thinning problem. From vitamins/supplements to hair loss kits to hair masks to other hair loss shampoos and NOTHING helped until I laid my hands on the Ultrax Labs Hair Surge Caffeine Hair Loss Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo. I’ve been using this shampoo for about 2 weeks now and I already notice a difference! Ever since I began using this shampoo my hair feels thicker and fuller. In addition, this shampoo has accelerated my hair growth… I can see baby hairs beginning to grow around my hairline. Furthermore, when I go shower now or brush my hair I notice a considerably less amount of hair falling out.

Alexa says:

I am an avid Amazon shopper and although I base most of my purchases off of the percentage of positive reviews, I have never written a review for a product before. I was very hesitant to try this product because of the high price. However, now that I am ready to buy my third bottle, I figured that it was time to state that this shampoo has worked wonders for me and my fine, thin hair.

I started using this shampoo in January…I don’t wash my hair every day, but 3-4 times a week, I would use 2-3 pumps of this shampoo in my hair, leave it on for the suggested 2 minutes, and rise out. To be honest, I wasn’t really noticing a huge difference in length, growth or shedding, and was not planning on purchasing a second time. However, when I went to see my stylist in April for a cut & color, as soon as she touched my hair, she said, “Whoa, what did you do to your hair? It feels a lot thicker!” I told her about this shampoo I had been using for the past few months, and she was so impressed, that she immediately bought a bottle for her mom, who is losing her hair.

After my visit to the salon, I decided I would buy one more bottle and see if I would be able to notice some difference. It is now July, and obviously, I have noticed…and so have many of my friends/co-workers and husband. This shampoo is expensive, but you do not need to use it daily…or at least, I do not use it daily…and have still seen results. For anyone on the fence, buy it/try it. It does what it is supposed to do.

How To Use It

The caffeine shampoo has a thick, almost honey-like, consistency. So you don’t need to use too much of it (especially if you have thin hair or fine hair), as it might weigh it down.

Psst…You might not see a big, foamy lather – but that’s because this is a paraben-free shampoo. Parabens are added to commercial products to give a lather, but they can strip your scalp of its natural oils and leave your hair feeling dry and brittle.

Unfortunately, Hair Surge does contain sulfates (which can also lead to dry or frizzy hair) – so if you want a sulfate-free option, check out my favorite sulfate free shampoos in this post.

It’s worth noting though, sulfates don’t affect everyone – I never had any issues when using Nioxin, for instance, and it actually improved hair growth for me – so you might not see any adverse effects of using Hair Surge with its SLES content.

To use Ultrax Labs Hair Surge for hair thinning…

  • Apply a small amount to wet hair and massage it into the scalp.
  • Focus mainly on the scalp for application, the shampoo will reach the ends when you rinse it out (and you won’t need to use as much)
  • Leave it in for a maximum of two minutes and rinse right through to your ends before following up with your favorite conditioner
  • For best results, Ultrax Laboratories recommend using Hair Surge a maximum of 5 times per week. Give your hair a break from shampoos on the other days to avoid drying it out!

Side Effects & Contraindications

When you switch to any new product, you encounter the risk of side effects. Particulary a hair loss treatment or shampoo; you may experience initial hair shedding as your scalp gets used to the new formula – although this shouldn’t last more than a couple of weeks.

Even though Ultrax Labs Caffeine-Stimulating shampoo is a pretty natural hair care product, that doesn’t mean it won’t cause reactions, especially for those with very sensitive skin or who may have allergies to some of the natural ingredients.

Potential side effects range from mild scalp irritation and itching to more severe issues like hives, nausea or facial swelling. If you have a sensitive scalp, or you want to try a great hair growth shampoo with zero side effects (that I could find anyway!), I’d really recommend Revita as it’s hypoallergenic, sulfate free and suitable for all hair types.

Revita is by far my favorite shampoo to improve scalp health, reduce shedding, boost volume and stimulate hair growth. It’s the one I use personally and I love to share it with others, too!

Contraindications / When to Avoid:

If you’re using birth control pills or anticoagulants, check with your doctor before using any product that includes saw palmetto, as it can interfere with their effectiveness. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor, too.

Revita contains plenty of great ingredients to promote hair growth and block DHT (but not saw palmetto) and is also safe for pregnancy/nursing. Yay!

Common Questions

Where can I buy Ultrax Labs Hair Surge?

This caffeine stimulating shampoo is only available online: I’d recommend buying it either direct from the manufacturer or from a trusted retailer on Amazon.

Is Ultrax Labs a DHT blocker?

Yes, the hair loss shampoo uses saw palmetto, caffeine and ketoconazle to naturally block this hormone.

What are the pros and cons of Ultrax Labs?

The pros of using Ultrax Labs is that it actually does seem to promote hair growth, reduce hair thinning and provide thicker, shinier and stronger hair – without any reported harsh side effects that I could find. The main con is that it’s quite expensive…and a few customers said it left their hair frizzy and dry.

Final Thoughts: Experiment With Ultrax Labs!

From what I’ve read, including my research into the company, the ingredients contained in the DHT-blocking caffeine formula and the many positive customer reviews out there, I’d be confident in recommending Ultrax Labs.

Sure, it’s a bit pricier than its competitors – ok, FAR pricier! – but since it’s a unisex shampoo, it can be used by men and women and shared with your partner as part of your journey towards healthier hair!

Remember, you also don’t need to keep pumping out the shampoo until you get a lather on – without parabens, that just ain’t gonna happen. And that’s a good thing.

If you want a cheaper, sulfate-free option that’s extra kind to your scalp, then go for Revita (read my full post to learn more!) Or if you’re happy to use your shower as a kind of laboratory, yourself as the guinea pig, then get experimenting with this scalp-stimulating caffeine shampoo – and please, feel free to share your results below!
